Regional Predictions *
There is a lot a variation in budget variance among regions. The South and West are predicted to change little month over month, but the South predicts a 300 bps increase year over year. The largest relative year-over-year shift is anticipated to take place in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic, at about 35 percent or just over 150 bps. Meanwhile, the Midwest is an outlier with large decreases expected compared to the same period last month and last year.

National Profitability Predictions
Nationally, predictions for September expect year-over-year increases for both EBITDA Margin and Operating Margin of 111 bps and 80 bps, respectively. Operating EBITDA Margin is skewed lower, indicating that most hospitals predict small improvements or decreases, but there is a tail of hospitals expecting large improvements. Operating Margin predictions also are generally positive, but expectations are more evenly spread. Month-over-month performance for both metrics is anticipated to be lower than in July.

Bed Size Predictions
Most bed-size cohorts predict an increase in Operating EBITDA Margin performance in September compared to July and year over year. Hospitals with 0-25 beds are the only group expecting decreasing year-over-year change, while 0-25 and 26-99 bed hospitals expect to see a decrease month over month. Hospitals with 500 beds or more expect to see about a 30 percent year-over-year increase in Operating EBITDA Margin, while hospitals with 300-499 beds expect to see the largest increase at more than 50 percent year over year.
