Readers,
Welcome to the first issue of the National Hospital Flash Report in 2020. As we look at the December results, we see that the nation’s hospitals and health systems experienced improved margin performance for the last month of the calendar year. This is welcome news after volume and revenue declines and higher-than-expected expenses weakened November performance. For next month, hospitals anticipate mixed results, with margin increases year over year, but decreases month over month.
In this month’s Spotlight, four of our experts look to the future to explore potential applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning to healthcare—as well as how these technologies already are being used to help hospitals lower costs and enhance efficiencies, outcomes, and care management.
The team is hard at work analyzing last year’s results for our annual “Year in Review” issue next month. The special edition will examine overall 2019 performance compared to 2018 across the core areas of Profitability, Volumes, Revenues, and Expenses.
The results are certain to be compelling as we continue to monitor the performance of hospitals across the country during these times of great change in healthcare. Thank you, as always, for your continued readership.

Thanks,
Jim Blake
